Daddy

The title character of this 1991 TV movie is played by Dermot Mulroney, a high school senior with a promising future. Patricia Arquette is the mommy, who conceives a child with him their first time out. Neither is mature enough to understand themselves, much less how to raise a baby. Danny Aiello is the teacher who warned them, and Noelle plays their mutual wiseacre friend who already knows about things like IUD's. She likes to sit in the back, because that's where the action is (like impromptu fistfights), except when she's modelling for an art class (her boyfriend is constructing a clay bust of her on the lower left). Watching Dermot give up one dream after another for whiny Patricia makes this whole movie an effective birth control device.
(By the way, take another look at the picture at the top of this page. Notice the earrings? They're seahorses! An underwater species in which the male carries the young, which is certainly what seems to happen to Dermot in this movie. Was that the costumer's idea, Noelle's, or just a mere coincidence? Noelle does seem to like defining her characters by the accessories she wears, like rings and bracelets, in just about every movie. Something to think about!)
